Towing with a 1995 Yukon
Question:
I am towing a 2,000# boat with my 1995 5.7l, 200hp Yukon. Without the boat, I get 10 – 12 mpg on the highway (all flat terrain). While towing (65 mph), 3,000 rpm in 3rd. All this does not perform as I would expect from this vehicle. In a review for the 1995 Suburban I read recently, it stated that it could "tow it at 65mph down an interstate in fourth at about 2,200 rpm." Is this "as expected" performance for this rig? I’ve changed air filter (K-H) and plugs but still little improvement. Appreciate any comments. Cheers, Paul
Response:
Towing load isn’t entirely dependent on weight. Aerodynamics is also very important. If your boat has an open cabin on the back this could make the aerodynamics much poorer. If this is a case perhaps a cover for the boat or cabin might help. The RPM figure is also depends on the axle ratio you have — make sure that you aren’t comparing apples and oranges. Finally, while you may be able to tow in 4th (overdrive), Chevrolet advises against it. If you put it in 4th and find that the transmission hunts for gears, you should probably just leave it in 3rd. And as always, nothing kills an automatic transmission faster than heat, so if you don’t have an auxilliary transmission cooler yet, install one now.
