automatic transmissions will often make a whining sound if the pump is going bad. the dealer or a trans. shop should be able to do a pressure check on your transmission to see if the pump is developing the proper fluid pressure. -rob – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >hello all, my new Chevrolet 3500 with 5.7L & Heavy duty transmission is >creating a whistling when in Overdrive. Hi. I just bought a used ’99 Silverado (old body style) ex-cab 4×4 w/ 5.7L, 18,000 mi. I have heard a similar humming sound when I first start my truck. I can hear it best with my ear between the cab and the bed. Mine sounds kinda like a teapot whistle only lower pitched. I think it may be coming from the catalytic converter. Please follow up with your dealers input. Also, does anybody know why Chevrolet put out the ’99’s with the old and the new body style with different engine choices in the same year? Just to update the group, dealer said he would replace fuel pump at 3k oil change, pump noise is really subjective, heard 3 different levels on both classic C/K’s and new Silverado. As far as pump goes, dealer "Nesmith" Hinesville GA. would replace for peace of mind. Tranny noise, wrote it up on ticket for the record, but again, heard it on several other heavy duty trans on the lot. I have been driving 5 speeds for the last 15 years, and I guess it may be something I haven’t been used to. Whistling was never really loud, but noticeable at certain rpm ranges in first gear. dealership has been around for 25 years, and they swear, the 4L80E tranny is as solid as they come. — Christopher C.
